Make the most of the space in small rooms

Space is a big issue with a child’s room and often it seems that no room will ever be large enough? A small room need not always be a disadvantage though, often children will prefer the feeling of security that a small and compact room can instil. A little creative thinking can go a long way where space is an issue, as always, it’s just a case of making the best of what you’ve got.

The two most important components of any room are the windows and doors. Where these are positioned and the space they take up will influence your choice in terms of what furniture you can use.

Go Upwards

Ideally furniture items such as wardrobes and cupboards should take up as little floor space as possible. Selecting furniture with height is a great way of utilising the room space without being over-bearing. Use the highest, least accessible spaces for storage of bedding or little used items while utilising the easy to reach areas for everyday use.
Bunk beds and cabin beds are perfect for this situation, particularly when the space beneath is used as storage or a study desk.

Use Light Cleverly

Avoid table side lamps and portable lighting which takes up space, wall mounted lighting is ideal for small rooms where space is at a premium. Positioned correctly clever lighting can add a feeling of space in the smallest of rooms.
Up-lighters will focus attention on the wide open ceiling space and a central decorative light shade will make this dead space more interesting.

Get Busy

A common mistake many people make is to opt for plain decorations in a small room to create an illusion of space. This rarely works and the opposite can be more effective. Pretending that a small room isn’t small will not fool anyone so don’t be afraid to try bolder colours and patterns.

Be Innovative

There are many clever and innovative storage solutions available these days which help to keep rooms tidy and un-cluttered. Under-bed storage boxes, wardrobe organisers and shoe racks will do much to save space and bring order to a confined space.
